Creating your first Watch List To create a Watch List is fast an easy. To do this, you must create a new Group. Here is how to do it. • Press the "+" sign (in the group area). A pop up box will appear. • Enter any desired name to call the group. Press return. • The new group name will appear in the group section. • Add in symbols to this group – To do this, you have a choice of two (2) methods. § Method A) Type in a symbol in the symbol selector field and then left mouse click on the "+" sign (in the symbol area). § Or Method B) Type in a symbol in the symbol selector field, then left mouse click in the blank box to the right, then press return. When this box is checked, symbols will be added to the currently selected watch list when return is pressed.
Note: When symbols are added to a user defined group, by default, they are also included in the "All" group.
Managing Symbols in your Watch List Here are a few quick examples for illustration purposes of the basics.
Example 1: Let say you have a Watch List Group called "Gold" with symbols "BGO" and "GG" in it … and another Watch List called "My Portfolio" which does not contain either of these symbols. You want to be able to view both "BGO" and "GG" in your "My Portfolio" list. Sometimes you may want to have the same symbol in multiple Watch Lists. In this example, we want to choose a "Copy" function (to copy symbols from "Gold" to "My Portfolio") or, an alternative way to accomplish the same thing is for you to "Add" the symbols to "My Portfolio". (See the how to do the Copy function below … see how to "Add" symbols above.)
Example 2: Let say you have a Watch List Group called "Tech Stocks" with symbols "MSFT" and "KLAC" in it … and another Watch List called "My Portfolio" which does not contain either of these symbols. You want to be able to view "MSFT" and "KLAC" only in your "My Portfolio" list. Some times you may want to just move a symbol from one watch list to another. In this example, we want to choose a "Cut" function (to cut symbols from "Tech Stocks" to "My Portfolio"). (See the how to do the Cut function below.)
The Power of "Cut", "Copy" and "Paste" These three functions are very powerful feature in assisting you in building and managing your StockShareV2 Watch List. In addition, you can "Cut" or "Copy" a list of symbols from other applications, such as "Note Pad", "Excel" or even a "Web Page", and then "Paste" it into your Watch List Group.
The BASICS on Cutting, Copying and Pasting – • Open the 1st Watch List Group by going to the Group's section and left mouse clicking on the drag down arrow and selecting the desired group (or list from another application). • Select the symbol(s) by highlighting them. § To select an individual symbol – Left mouse click on the symbol name to highlight it. § To select a group of symbols which are consecutively linked together – Left mouse click on the symbol name at the beginning of the list to highlight it. Then Hold down the Shift Key and Left mouse click on the symbol name at the end of the list to highlight them all. § To select a group of symbols which are NOT consecutively linked together – Left mouse click on the symbol name at the beginning of the list to highlight it. Ø Open the 2nd Watch List Group by going to the Group's section and left mouse clicking on the drag down arrow and selecting the desired group. Ø Then press the "Paste" icon in the Group Symbol section. All the symbols should appear.
HINT: Let say you wanted to create a Watch List of the Dow 30 Industrials … symbol ^DJI. You create a group named ^DJI. Then open a browser and go to http://finance.yahoo.com/m1?u. Find the ^DJI symbol and select "Components". This will bring you to a Web page containing all of the symbols making up the Dow 30 Industrial. You will then want to highlight all of the symbols. Select copy from your browser. (It is ok if you select the other columns at the same time … StockShareV2 knows to only copy in the information from the first column.) Now go to your StockShareV2 program and press "Paste". … There you have the Dow 30 Industrials add to your Watch List.
NOTE: Data NOT in a column? ... NO PROBLEM ... You can copy a row of symbol data, for example (IBM MSFT GE ) and the press 'CTRL-Shift' button ... THERE ... You have then added them to your Watch List.
Using the TAG feature --- Why and How Why - As a diversified investor, you may want to have many different Watch List Groups to peruse through. Most often, many of the symbols within a single Watch List Group may not be approaching your trading criteria. But, sometimes, they do approach your criteria and you want to segregate them out to do further analysis. StockShareV2 allows you to "Tag" these symbols with a check mark. Then, by selecting the Group called "Checked", you can view all of them at once.
How – StockShareV2 allows you two (2) ways to "Tag" these symbols with a check mark. • Method A) Highlight a symbol in the Group Symbol area ie. Watch list area and toggle the check mark on and off by using the space bar. • Or Method B) You can use a left mouse click in the box to the left of the symbol to toggle the check mark on and off.
Note: By pressing the "Cleared Checked" this will clear the "check marks" in the selected group.
The "Watch List Slide Show" is a quick and effective way for the user to review all symbols in your watch list in short order. The user can select any available group then rapidly scroll through stocks in the list by pressing the "keyboard arrow". Functionality of the both the down arrow and up arrow works.
