Configure Tabs and Chart Pages This section explains how to configure Tabs and Chart Pages. This is how a user would customize StockShareV2 to meet their analysis needs.
The first three (3) icons (left to right) in the Program Tool Bar are associated with configurations. They are:
After selecting the "add a tab" feature, StockShareV2 will prompt the user to name the tab. The user chooses a name for that tab. For example, if the intention is to generate a two-page tab with a candlestick price in the upper chart page and volume in the lower chart page, the name could be "Price/Volume". In the example shown below, the tab has been named "Price/Volume". After entering the name, select "OK".
Note: Each tab must have a unique name.
Selecting the tab name will then result in another dialog box to display. This example shows a selection of two (2) chart pages. (Two (2) is the default value. Use the drop down arrow to select any other number up to ten (10)). Then click "OK" following the user's choice of number of charts. This action will provide the following display.
As shown above, the user has generated a Tab (Price/Volume) with two (2) chart pages ready to be populated with chart types.
To remove a chart tab, you must delete the tab by using the "Removing the Chart Tab" function. There are two (2) ways to access this: (a) Click on the "-" Icon on the tool bar or (b) go into "Edit" …"Remove chart Tab". After selecting the "remove a tab" feature, StockShareV2 will prompt the user to confirm removal.
To rename a Chart Tab, this takes only a few simple steps. First goto "Edit" …"Re-Order / Rename Chart Tabs ... ". Then highlight the Tab name to be changed with a left mouse click. Then select the "Rename" button … a pop up box will appear … input the new name … press 'OK'.
This example is representative of the process required for all the techniques you can use in StockShareV2.
Price – Candle, Bar (also referred to as OHLC), or Line To finish this example, we will enter Candlestick Price as the upper chart page and Volume as the lower chart page. Follow the instructions on the upper chart page (using Right mouse button to select chart type). In the pop-up Menu, click on "Price -> Candlestick". The result will be a Candlestick chart representation of the stock symbol in the symbol box.
Note: Line charts can also be created. To do this, first create a OHLC price page. Now change the property colors for this price indicator to 'Transparent'. This will give the appearance that there are not any bars on the page. Next, add an SMA line onto the chart … Change the SMA period property to '1' … and there you have it … a 'Line Chart'.
Volume –Volume Bar, Accumulation Distribution, and On Balanced Volume
Follow the same procedure in the lower chart page of this Tab. Select "Volume". This time the user will be presented with a second pop-up Menu. Select and click on "Volume Bar". The lower chart page is now populated with a Volume Bar chart.
The populated pages can be seen below.
Other Chart Types – MACD, Stochastics, Williams %R, RSI, 5-Day Arms, Average True Range, CCI, Chande Momentum Oscillator, Directional Movement Indicator, Moving Average Oscillator, Stochastics RSI, TRIX and Ultimate Oscillator.
The pop-up menu to the right identifies the other analyses that require a separate chart page for display.
Configuring 'Chart Page Properties' & 'Chart Preference' Boxes
The 'Chart Page Properties' feature offers three 'Chart Page modification' options which the user to can choose from. Access is by right mouse clicking on any chart page and selecting "properties". These include: • Symbol selection to be either 'current' or 'fixed' Click here to see more. • Turn horizontal and vertical lines on or off Click here to see more. • Y axis scaling to be either automatic or manual. Click here to see more.
The 'Chart Page Preferences' feature offers 5 'Chart Page modification' options which the user to can choose from. Access is by going into the EDIT menu then select Chart Preferences…. These include: • Change Label and Tick Mark color. Click here to see more. • Change Margin Periods Click here to see more. • Turn 'Alternate Year shading' on or off Click here to see more. • Turn 'Legends' on or off Click here to see more. • Change Chart background color Click here to see more. • Turn the 'Vertical Highlight' on or off Click here to see more.
The following features allow the user to compare the performance parameter of one stock to another or to an index. The Fix to Symbol feature accommodates this type of comparison. To utilize this, generate a tab with two chart pages, name the Tab "SPX" and populate each page with Candlesticks. Then, right mouse click on the lower chart page and select "properties". This action will produce a display as seen in.
Note: Entries are shown for convenience.
To continue configuring this chart page, select "Set Chart Name" and enter "SPX" (or other user preferred text). Select "fix chart to symbol" and enter "^SPX" (or other user preferred symbol). To remove the horizontal or vertical grid lines (optional), left mouse click in the checked box (the check mark will disappear). Select "OK". The results of these actions are displayed below (see paragraph following for further explanations).
In the figure above, when a different symbol is selected, the upper chart page will change but the lower chart page will continue to display the SPX (S&P 500) Candlestick. Confluence, Fibonacci and Trend Lines, plus all the Overlay analyses can be displayed on any one, or all, chart pages. Notice that the tab has been named SPX so the user can quickly click on that tab when looking to compare a stock's price (in our example) to the SPX price. Also notice the SPX in the Stock Legend Bar of the lower chart page. This is a reminder that the lower chart page is fixed to SPX.
The user can toggle the horizontal and vertical lines on or off with a left mouse click in the box.
The user can toggle the Y axis scaling to be either automatic or manual. If the 'Auto' box is not checked, then the user must input the Min (lower limit) and the Max (upper limit).
Change Label and Tick Mark Color
The user can change chart label and tick mark color by using the drop down arrow. Note: A choice of 'Transparent' has been added.
The margin is the area located to the right of the current period candle and to the left of the Y Axis Legends. The user can change margin periods by either increasing or decreasing the toggle arrows or the user can input a number. The Margin periods are equal to the time frame the user has previously set.
Turn 'Alternate Year Shading' On or Off
The user can turn the X Axis 'Alternate Year shading' on or off by toggling the check mark.
The user can turn the Y Axis 'Legends' on or off by toggling the check mark.
The user can change chart background color. There are over 250 colors to choose from.
The user can turn the cursor 'Vertical Highlight' on or off. A check mark in the box will show a 'blue vertical highlight' on the date in which the cursor was last mouse clicked.
Add an Overlay Right mouse click on any Candlestick or Volume Bar Chart type and select "Add Overlay". The options appear in a second Menu. Select from these Analytical Techniques to place (overlay) them on the chart.
Remove an overlay Right mouse click on the chart, go to the overlay you wish to remove and click the "X Remove" button. This will clear the overlay from the chart.
Changing and Removing Indicator Properties In the figure above, both Bollinger Bands (green) and Parabolic SAR (black) are overlaid on a chart. They are selected just as previous overlay analyses are selected by using the right mouse button. Once a Bollinger Band or a Parabolic SAR is selected, the user has the option of changing the properties or removing the overlay (X Remove). The property selection allows the user to customize the indicator parameters and visual appearance.
General comments about Overlays The period of time (Daily, Weekly or Monthly) selected on the chart will determine the period represented by the overlays (also other type analyses).
The value (at the current cursor position) is shown on the Stock Legend Bar for the following analyses: Bollinger Bands, Parabolic SAR, and both Simple and Exponential Moving Averages. By moving the cursor along the chart (after left clicking on the mouse), the user can view different values along the analysis. These values display on the Stock Legend Bar.
Swings will also place references in this area, but they are not values. They are keys defining which Break or Test is applicable for a particular Candlestick. The applicable value can be viewed using the Tool Tip feature.
After a technique is overlaid on a candlestick chart, the next time an overlay is selected, that particular technique is no longer available for selection. The menu item will not be shown as BOLD in the pop-up menu. This is true for all but Simple Moving Averages and Exponential Moving Averages because multiple SMAs and EMAs may be used.
After a stock symbol has been entered into the Symbol field, press Enter and StockShareV2 will collect data from the Internet. In addition, StockShareV2 will check to see if Confluence calculators, Fibonacci calculators, Trendlines, or Price Labels have been added in prior sessions with this symbol. When detected, these analyses will be added to the chart automatically.
StockShareV2 automatically saves these studies when you exit the application or elect to investigate a new stock symbol. This feature precludes the necessity of re-creating the analyses, which would normally require that you have some sort of record in order to duplicate the inputs. For example, the chart below indicates a tab displaying a Confluence calculation that was previously completed based on the stock symbol "A".
